Hi everyone,
This is a short update on the online course. I’m sure it’s going to happen, in some form, although I’m finding the thought a bit scary. My plan: The next thing that will happen (publicly) will be a “let’s get going” post here, potentially in about a week, giving details and structure, and likely announcing the first lecture. I have an email list (consisting of those who asked to be on it) which exists for a single use: to let people know when this “let’s get going” post has gone up. If you’re already following the blog, you’ll already know, so you needn’t be on the email list. But feel free to ask to be on it.
I’m basically settled on technology. (WordPress, discord, dropbox, zoom, youtube, googleforms.) So right now I’m (in the interstices between other things) setting things up, and sketching out how this can work.
Standing caveats (I’ll be slow or unresponsive on email due to volume, etc.) apply. (At the moment, I have ten emails on this topic needing a response, for example.)
One thing on my mind I may as well ask now, as long as I’m here — are there any platforms that people will have trouble using? (Everything I mentioned is free to use, but there may be countries that are unable to access some sorts of things.) This is not going to be perfect, but I’d prefer to make things as accessible as possible.
Another thing to ask now: if 8 am Pacific, once per week (say for 1 hour, but maybe as much as 1.5 hours), what day of the week? I am wondering if it would be too radical to have it on the weekend — because people might have the most flexibility in their schedule. I don’t know if this would cause obstructions for religious reasons, for example. Or if on a weekday, it’s not at all clear to me what my own preference would be. (One necessity is that the plan be workable for me most weeks.)

Oh, please add me on the mailing list. My email id is “bijaym@tcd.ie”. Also, if anyone wants to be partners in homework group/discussion mail me.

Thanks! Rather than sending you an email, let me just say what the email would say: the next post with organizational stuff will appear in the next few days (I’m just sleeping on the draft, and also sorting out days).

Hi, I am a graduate student at La Sapienza (University of Rome). I am very interested in this online course. Can I be added to the mail list?
I do not know how things will work for homework groups, maybe it can be helpful to know my background: I have had a first course in Algebraic Geometry, in which I learned, say, the first chapter of Hartshorne and I have just started studying something about schemes by myself.
Thank you so much for this initiative!

Hi is this Alessio who was at Orsay earlier this year? If so maybe you can write me an email? I couldn’t find yours anywhere…

Thanks for offering the course on algebraic geometry. I will be attending it and for me weekend is totally fine. If you ask which day in weekend, then I would say Saturday.
Thanks

Thank you Vivek!

Lectures on the weekend would be ideal for me as I would love to follow live. But most important is your preference, Ravi, and then the preferences of the audience.
May 8, 2020 at 11:58 pm
Thank you Jan! Fitting this around family and work duties is indeed a touch complicated for me…

Maybe 8am is too early for people on the east coast? Especially if it’s on the weekend. I personally prefer to schedule it later in the day, but I’m fine with weekdays and weekends.
One thing about Zoom: if Zoom is going to be used, then a Business hosting account may be preferable than a Pro account, as the latter can only host 100 people. Earlier this week this problem arose in an online math lecture series in China on Zoom.

If by east coast, you mean the east coast of the US, then 8am in California is actually 11 am on the east coast — so if that’s early for the east coast, think about the suffering over here! About Zoom — we’ll do this by “webinar”, which I think can have 1000 people.
May 9, 2020 at 12:27 am
as a West Coast folk, I’m also hoping for a later time. Think of the suffering of waking before 8 am T.T
May 9, 2020 at 1:50 am
I’ll be here in sunny Scottland so 8am in california looks to be 4pm for me, which is actually perfect for me!! I’ve read some of your notes now by the way (not much though because I’m currently halfway through my exams), they’re very good!
May 10, 2020 at 1:56 pm
Ah I was meant to say west coast
May 10, 2020 at 4:42 pm
@Ellie, at least I won’t be the only one suffering. (Others will be suffering on Saturday night…)
And thank you @Will!

Weekend lectures would be great from my perspective as it would allow me most times to follow in real time, which I would prefer. But it first depends on your preference, Ravi, and then of the audience’s.

May I also be added to the list, please? I think you have access to my email, so I’m not leaving it here for spam. If otherwise, please let me know.

Please add me on the email list – william.bevington@zoho.eu – I’m so glad you’re doing this course, I had it set to read the rising sea this summer in time for my dissertation next year!

I’d strongly prefer a weekday. On a weekend many people with families (including myself) will never be able to attend. Aside from that, I don’t have a preference. You could use when2meet to take a quick poll.
Speaking of – how long do you think this course will last for?
May 7, 2020 at 11:07 am
Any day in the week is okay. I am highly interested to join this course. Can I have the details that how would I be connected to this course when it will start?
May 9, 2020 at 12:00 am
I’ll explain that in the next post. Basically, the regular lectures should happen at a regular time, and there will be an accompanying post for each lecture. There will also be discussion sections on discord. (More soon…)
May 9, 2020 at 12:02 am
Thanks! I completely understand the family constraints. (And even on a weekday, the time will be in the evening for many participants.) I realize that many people might watch the lectures after the fact. But if much of the discussion is asynchronous on discord or wordpress, then I hope that will help.

Please, add me too to the mailing list, my mail is albemerlano@gmail.com
I’m really interested in this course. I have no preference for the day or the hour (but I really would like to have a registration. I’m from Italy, maybe this would help with the time zone). I feel confortable with zoom.

I would suggest coming up with a handful of times that work for you (most weeks), and then polling people on the email list with a when2meet poll.
May 9, 2020 at 12:07 am
I’d not known about when2meet — I’ll have to check it out. (I’ve used whenisgood and doodle so far…)
